First Week

Here are some of my favorite photos of Oscar at 1 /12 to 2 weeks old.
June 9th-14th

Oscar Meets Tim!

We made it to Saturday without blowing Oscar's cover.  Byron and Kirby picked Tim up at airport, while Christine and Taylor were busy with friends.  Taylor was thrilled he didn't have to be here when Tim saw Oscar. He was still afraid he was going to be the dead son-in-law.   Tim went to put his suitcase in the bathroom where Oscar had taken up residency.   We heard Tim, "Susie, I told you NO!"  Well this was a minute later.

Yep, I think Oscar is here to stay!

The Name Game

We had decided on the name "Truffles" when we were in the pig plotting stages.  Here is an article on pigs and truffles.  By truffles we are not talking about chocolate but mushrooms.  Trust me, if it were chocolate everyone would own a pig!

Once the pig was here I wasn't sure about naming him Truffles anymore.  He just didn't look like a Truffle to me.  Some name options we came up with were BB(Q), Jimmy Dean, Plumpkin, Arnold and my favorite Bacon.  Taylor was set on  Notorious P.I.G, after a famous rapper.

I sent everyone this adorable picture of the pig

But Taylor was determined to have this!  I don't think so.

I did some searching online for pigs name and ran across the name "Oscar".  This name seemed to fit him, plus "Oscar Mayer" is known for their bacon!  PERFECT!   I ran it by Christine and she loved it.    As I was telling Christine I really thought Oscar was the perfect name the electricity flickered on and off.  I took that as a sign that my mom loved the name.  She had always wanted a pig.
So Oscar was named!

Oscar Makes it Home!

Shaughn went up in the attic and found the Port a Crib that we had saved from when Kirby was born.  Mom read up on owning Teacup Pigs.  One interesting fact I learned is that all pigs are born the approximate same size regardless if they are micro-pig or a big bacon sow!  Tons of people think they are getting a micro and find out months later that have a 200 lb pig or larger on their hands!  YIKES!  The kids did see the piggies mom and dad, so I think our chances are pretty good he will stay small.

He slept through the night from the beginning.

Oscar was born on May 30th, 2014, making him 11 days old when we got him. Pigs can be taken from their mom a day or so after they are born.  They will  learn drink from a bottle or bowl quickly. Oscar is drinking goat's milk.
He was already pottie trained.  The seller said they were working on it.  We they succeeded because he used his pottie bin right away.

He did nip at us pretty hard and squealed like crazy when we picked him up. Tim wasn't getting home till Sunday so had 6 days to whip him into shape. Taylor did didn't think we could keep it from Tim for six days.   I wasn't sure how this was going to work out. .

Pick Up

How Oscar came to be a McCormick....

In the Beginning.......As we were walking through Sams's Club in May...

Christine-"Taylor and I have the BEST Mother's Day Gift for you but it will have to wait until we get back from our Alaskan Cruise."

She wouldn't say what it was... she was afraid Tim and I would say no.   I was finally able to pry it out of her... under the condition I wouldn't tell her dad, she was afraid he would say no..... A Teacup Pig.  WHAT!?!?!

Shaughn (running to his dad of course)..."No, we are not getting pig. Dad! Dad! Christine wants to buy mom a pig.  Tell her 'no'!!"

Dad -"Christine! No pig!  Your mom and I want to start traveling and we decided no more animals.  Don't get a pig."

On our Cruise...Christine kept saying it was happening... There was going to be a pig. Tim kept saying there better not be!  We decided if there was a pig, the animal war was starting. We may get a pig but who knows what Christine and Taylor could end up with... a monkey, ostrich, a white declawed tiger... Hmmm. The kids and I kept teasing about the name Truffles - if there happened to be a pig. This could get interesting!

June 9-We got home from our cruise on the 8th. Yep, you guessed it... Christine and I hit Craigslist and came upon this ad.

Christine wanted me to call and talk to the seller but I told her to do it.  If she made the call then I wasn't part of the purchase, right?  She called and found out some information and told her we would think about it and call back. An hour later I got on the phone and called her back. I told her my kids would drive over and look at the pigs.  I figured if I stayed home, that meant I didn't actually take part in the purchase, right!  You married a smart cookie, Timothy McCormick!

Christine called Taylor to let him know they were going to get a pig. He was a little worried, ok, VERY worried. He didn't know how Mr. Tim was going to handle it. Christine, Taylor, Kirby, and Uncle Byron drove the two hours over to Zolfo Springs to see the little piggies.  The kids were able to pick from two baby pigs and were instructed to send me pictures of both.

An hour later the kids start messaging me photos...

An hour after those wonderful photos, they sent the real pictures.

Hmmmm, which pig do I want? When the kids got there they began to rethink the pig purchase.  The place was so loud with all the pigs squealing.  The kids were glad I had not gone with them because they knew I would have nixed the idea after hearing all the noise.

Taylor and Byron really like this one. Taylor tried to take better picture of this one so I would pick him.
They said he whined and squealed sooo loud, though!  So why would I want this one?

Christine and Kirby liked this one. He was somewhat quieter and they thought I would like him because of the spots.

The other options were....

Nah... We will stick with a pig!

It was a hard decision. They picked out the spotted one and headed home with him along with a bag full of toys, food, and directions.

This little piggy went to market,
This little piggy stayed home,
This little piggy had roast beef,
This little piggy had none.
This little piggy went ...
Wee, wee, wee,
all the way home!

...to be continued tomorrow!
